SHINE 2012
North Derbyshire shines for the Olympic Flame
North Derbyshire will celebrate in style when the Olympic Flame arrives in Britain on May 18th. The local SHINE 2012 project, which has inspired young people to create 13 replica torches, will host an event at the b2net Stadium and will include a Guinness World Record breaking attempt by young people from Brookfield School, a talk with local Liam Pitchford, England’s star Table Tennis player and special guests Martin Mansell, 9 times Paralympic Medallist Swimmer and Matt Black, Derbyshire’s new Poet Laureate.
A whole host of civic dignitaries and sporting, cultural and community organisations will attend the event to see the official presentation of the 13 replica torches to school representatives. The torches were created as part of a design competition last year as a symbol of friendship between schools and their communities. After the b2net event the torches will be made available to local event organisers for the duration of the Olympics and Paralympics to encourage support for the country’s biggest sporting occasion.
The day will begin with a 2012 inspired Business Breakfast hosted by Destination Chesterfield and Derbyshire Sport, followed by the main launch event, courtesy of Chesterfield Football Club.
Culturally inspired, the event is packed with sporting activities for guests to try out, musical, dance and theatre performances. As part of a Guinness World Record breaking attempt, Brookfield School will take part in a synchronised " Big Dance School Pledge" on the pitch for the largest Dance Routine - Multi-venue' at 1pm on 18 May 2012. Schools around the world will use their school halls, playgrounds, playing fields or to public spaces and perform the choreography. The current record is held by the Netherlands with 264,188 people and 1,472 locations.
Guests leading the exciting line-up include Martin Mansell, 9 times Paralympic Medallist Swimmer and Matt Black, Derbyshire’s new Poet Laureate, who will be championing new material. Derby-based 1623 Theatre Company, awarded the prestigious London 2012 Inspiremark, for its innovative approach to combining Shakespearean verse and physical fitness, will be inviting guests to play a unique part.
Young rising stars, including 18 year old Liam Pitchford from Brimington is currently the No. 1 in the England Table Tennis Senior Men rankings, supported by businesses through Derbyshire Sport’s ICON scheme, will tell guests how they are inspired to reach the top. Some inspirational people who have been selected to be official torch bearers on 29th June will tell their own unique stories and guests will have a chance to pose with a replica of the 1948 Olympic Torch.
The event will finish with a specially prepared musical performance from Newbold CE Primary School "…just like an athlete!" George Telfer, award winning local actor will be MC for the launch event and tops off our culturally inspired day. Click here to view the full programme.
The event marks the first stage of the SHINE 2012 Calendar of Replica Torch Handovers across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire until the close of the Paralympics.

Keeping Partners Connected
Partners are encouraged to work together to address issues that they cannot address in isolation. CHART LSP's new Flagship Approach aims to utilise partner inputs more efficiently and effectively in projects, of a narrower focus with broader impact.
In addition, we bring a wider audience of people together for our bi-annual Forum to share best practice, address key issues and new developments.
We produce an e-newsletter to keep partners updated on project activities and the latest news. Previous copies can be found in the Previous Activity, Newsletters page of our website.
This website
This website is designed to explain the purpose of the LSP, to identify the key players and to describe the structure of the Partnership. It will also tell you how you can contact the LSP Team for more information, and how you may become involved.
